On the Playground: Our First Talk About Prejudice - page 10

A Note from Dr. Jillian Roberts
,
Author and Child Psychologist
When I was growing up, it was common to see other kids being bullied on
the playground because they were different. Perhaps they looked different
or unique in some way, or perhaps they were born in a different country.
Whatever the reason, these kids were taunted and teased. Much to my
shame, I remember doing nothing. As I grew up, I came to understand that
this was not the right choice. A better choice would have been to reach out
to these other kids and offer them my friendship. I could have asked them
to sit beside me at lunch. I could have invited them to play with my group.
And, with the kids who were from different countries, I could have tried
to learn more about their cultures and traditions. Instead of just watching
the bullying happening around me, I could have been a child who made a
difference. I encourage all readers of this book to make better choices than
I did. You have the power to make your corner of the world a better place!
