Who’s a Magical Monster?
It didn’t always take much to be labeled a
monster. Sometimes seeming “magical” was as
simple as standing out in a crowd. During the
1690s, some women in Salem, Massachusetts,
were accused of witchcraft. These women often
had a few things in common. Most were more
outspoken than their neighbors. Many were
poor, widows, or childless. These women didn’t
fit popular ideas about what was “normal” in
their communities.
