One Big Feast
When seals are plentiful, polar bears eat only the
fat. They leave the rest of the meat, and other
predators like foxes and birds eat it. However,
during the summer there is less ice, and it is not as
easy to find seals. When seals are scarce, polar
bears eat their meat too. Rarely, polar bears eat
whatever they can find, sometimes birds or bird
eggs. Pregnant females in the Hudson Bay area can
go as long as eight months without food.
Birds may finish eating what
a polar bear leaves behind.
