BRIDGE
The first time I heard talk of this god and his punishment,
I looked around, frightened. Where was this white god? How
could he be everywhere? And how would he punish me?
None of the other girls seemed afraid. So I tried not to be
afraid too. I tried to listen and understand.
At the lesson after the church service, Pinch Finger
would speak more of the white god.
“God loves you,” she said, her voice strong and sure.
“But if this god loves us, why does he punish us too?” I
whispered to Moon Awake. “Pastor Huber said that he
punishes sinners.”
Moon Awake shrugged. “You ask too many questions,”
she said.
“Ella, if you believe in God fully and live your life for
Him, what happens when you die?” Pinch Finger asked.
“You go to heaven,” Moon Awake answered.
“Yes!” the teacher said. “And, Ruth, what is in heaven?”
“Food,” Small Rose answered, a dreamy look in her eyes.
“Well, yes, I suppose you are correct,” Pinch Finger said,
sighing. “But after you die you will no longer need food. Do
you understand?”
Small Rose nodded agreeably, but I knew she didn’t
understand. I didn’t understand either, and I was frustrated
