The Long Game
Over the course of the last 50 years, many
session musicians and bands have shaped the
history of popular music. A band called MFSB
was
integral
to the development of the disco
sound, providing backing for singers and
vocal groups of the 1970s and ’80s, while
Los Angeles-based outfit The Wrecking Crew
were so
influential
, they were given a place in
the Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
Variety of Jobs
There are a number of other performing
opportunities for professional musicians. Some
television shows will employ a
house band
to perform music, while some plays, such
as
musicals
, require a number of musicians.
If you’re a talented musician and want to
perform live, these are options to pursue.
Session musicians don’t just play
on records and CDs—often, they get
to go out on tour as part of a solo
artist’s backing band.
The Scoop
Some session musicians find fame in
their own right. After playing on stage
with Amy Winehouse, The Haggis Horns
were asked by Mark Ronson to play on his
Version
album. The CD was a worldwide
success and since then, the band has
toured the world headlining concerts in
the US and Europe.
