Sacred Flags and Wheels
These are prayer wheels. People turn
them clockwise when they walk past
them to “say” the prayer.
Prayer flags have prayers printed on
them and are hung on stone shrines
called
stupas
and on mountaintops.
Buddhists believe that when the
flags flap in the breeze, blessings are
carried across the countryside.
How to Say Hello in Nepal
When you pass Nepali people on the
trail between villages, here’s how to greet
them. They will often greet you like this.
1
Press your hands together and
hold them just below your chin.
2
Bow your head a little.
3
Say
Namaste
(NAH-mah-stay).
This means, “I salute the god in you.” If you want to
show respect (to an older or very important person),
say
Namaskar
instead.
