While Apple’s share of the smartphone market would remain
modest (usually varying between 15 and 20 percent), its control of
the hardware and of software distribution channels would make the
device very profitable, accounting for more than half the company’s
total revenue. Perhaps more significantly, Apple’s influence over the
design of modern smartphones and tablets is unmistakable.
Apps—a New Kind of Software
Another innovation by Apple led to the runaway success of the
iPhone and its competitors. It has to do not with hardware, design,
or user interface but with a new model for the development and
Steve Jobs introduces Apple’s new iPhone at a conference in 2007. Apple did not invent
the smartphone, but its innovations influenced nearly all subsequent smartphone designs.
