TheNatchezTornado
Natchez, Mississippi,
was a busy port on the Mississippi River
in the 19th century. In 1840, a tornado
struck the city. At least 317 people died.
Of those killed, 269 worked on boats in
the river. Sixty boats were destroyed.
Though this is the second-deadliest U.S.
tornado on record, there were probably
more than 317 deaths. At the time, the
death counts rarely included slaves.
