The 12 Biggest Breakthroughs in Movie Technology - page 6

Louis and Auguste Lumière were
French inventors who shot many
films. One of the first was The
Arrival of a Train
(1896). It simply
showed a train coming toward
audiences. Even though it was two-
dimensional, shown on a flat movie
screen, people worried they were
about to be run over.
The movie
The Power of Love
(1922) tried to take this real-
life effect even further. It was one of
the earliest movies to use an effect
called stereoscopic vision.
Movies using this effect were shot
on two strips of film. One was shot
through a blue filter and the other
through a red filter. Both strips
were projected onto the screen
at the same time. This gave the
movie a blurry look. That is, unless
moviegoers wore special glasses.
