Explore Iran: 12 Key Facts - page 6

Iran has nearly 124,000 miles
(200,000 km) of roads. Many
of these roads need upgrading.
Approximately 23,900 miles (38,463
km) are unpaved.
The capital city, Tehran, is home to
8.8 million people. Millions more
commute into the city for work.
Constructing roadways in this
crowded city isn’t easy. The
Sadr Expressway, built in 2012,
was Iran’s first multilevel, two-lane
expressway. Today city officials think
the expressway made traffic worse,
not better. More than 4 million cars
clog Tehran’s roads. More public
transportation is needed.
Iran has not been able to maintain
its airplanes and airports. Flying
capacity is only 6 million passengers
The
Tohid Tunnel
in Tehran was built
in 2009 to ease
traffic congestion
in the city.
