Ancient Egyptians took great care
with their dead. They preserved their
bodies and created underground
tombs for them. One of the most
famous groups of tombs is in the
Valley of the Kings, near the city of
Luxor. Pharaohs, queens, and high
priests were buried there during the
New Kingdom, which lasted from
1539 to 1075 BCE. There are more
than 60 tombs in the Valley of the
Kings. Some are small. Others are
very large, with over 100
underground chambers.
