US officials noticed the increased
activity in South Vietnam. At first, they
thought people were preparing for a
NewYear’s celebration called Tet. But US
general William Westmoreland thought
the increased movement might mean a
big attack was coming. However, he was
not sure when or where it might occur.
In past years, the North and South had
agreed to stop fighting during Tet. But
in , the North Vietnamese decided
to ignore the
cease-fire
. They hoped an
attack during Tet would catch US and
South Vietnamese troops off guard.
