These people were known as Loyalists.
They continued to hope the relationship
between the two sides could be fixed.
The Declaration of Independence made
Loyalists more worried than ever. As a
result, some made the difficult decision
to leave America.
A few Loyalists sailed back to Great
Britain. Some went to the other countries
under British control. One of the most
common destinations was the British
colonies in Canada. Many of the Loyalists
who went to Canada were rewarded for
their loyalty. The British often gave them
money. Other times they promised land.
