The area where Archaeopteryx lived
is now southern Germany. But at the
time, this area was much farther south.
The climate was warm and dry, with
occasional rainy seasons. During times of
rain, seasonal rivers and ponds formed.
Most plants in the area were small and
bushy. Only a few tall trees grew.
Scientists studied the shape of bones
in Archaeopteryx’s pelvis, legs, and feet.
They concluded that Archaeopteryx
probably spent most of its time on the
ground, the way chickens do. It walked,
ran, and jumped on two legs to chase prey
or flee predators. Scientists think it also
spent time in trees and bushes. It likely
