The Government of Canada created the Indian Act in 1876. This law
governs
the lives of Nuu-chah-nulth people. Because of this law, Nuu-chah-nulth children
were taken from their families. The children were sent to
residential schools
.
Nuu-chah-nulth were now called Indians. The government put them on reserves.
Many First Nations now prefer the term
First Nation community
and no longer
use
reserve
. Nuu-chah-nulth were not allowed to practise parts of their culture.
The Indian Act
limits how the Nuu-chah-nulth govern their lives and
territories today. The Nuu-chah-nulth continue to work for
self-determination
.
They work toward the right to govern their own lives.
