Glossary
BREED
To produce offspring
by joining male and female
reproductive cells.
BREEDING PROGRAMS
Organized
efforts to match up animals,
especially endangered animals,
for breeding. This helps to build a
large and healthy population and
to ensure that its species does not
die out.
CATHETER
A thin, flexible plastic
tube that is inserted into the body
for giving medicines or drugs or for
drawing out liquids, such as blood.
CENTRIFUGE
A machine that
spins or whirls rapidly, using
centrifugal force. It moves objects
or parts of objects outward from
the center of rotation, to separate
the components of substances
or to remove moisture from a
substance.
ENDANGERED
An animal species
that is growing smaller, due to
hunting or loss of habitat, and is in
danger of dying out, or becoming
extinct.
FECES
Solid waste matter that
passes out of an animal’s body.
GESTATION PERIOD
The length
of time that an animal needs to
develop in its mother’s body before
being born.
PARASITIC/PARASITES
A
description of an organism that
needs to live in, or on, the body of
another organism
to survive.
PIPETTE
A very small and thin
glass or plastic rod that transfers
small amounts of liquid.
PRIMATES
The animal group
that includes humans and other
animals, such as monkeys and
apes.
SEDATED
Calmed down as a result
of being given an injection of a
drug or some other substance that
produces results in sleepiness.

MATH GLOSSARY
BAR LINE CHART
This chart shows
information in lines. The height of the
line can be read against the scale on
the chart.
EQUILATERAL TRIANGLES
Triangles
with all three sides equal in length.
FRACTIONS
These are made when
shapes or numbers are cut into equal
parts. For example, if a shape is cut into
four equal parts, each part is one whole
divided by four, or a quarter (¼).
PENTAGON
A 2-D shape with five
sides.
REGULAR
Used to describe 2-D
shapes which have sides that are equal
in length and 3-D shapes with faces all
the same in shape and size.
RIGHT ANGLE
A quarter of a whole
turn or revolution, measured in degrees.
A right angle is 90 degrees (90˚).
VERTICES
The points or angles at
which two surfaces meet or intersect.
VOLUME
The amount of space
something takes up or how much it
holds, for example, the amount of liquid
a bottle holds.
