School-to-Home Support for

          Caregivers and Teachers

This appealing book is designed to teach students about core subject areas. Students will build
upon what they already know about the subject, and engage in topics that they want to learn
more about. Here are a few guiding questions to help readers build their comprehension skills.
Possible answers appear here in red.

          Before Reading:

What do I know about this topic?
            • I know that Clara Barton founded the Red Cross.
            • I know that Clara felt called to help people with medical problems.
What do I want to learn about this topic?

            • I want to learn what inspired Clara Barton to dedicate her life to helping people.
            • I want to learn if Clara had a family of her own or if she stayed single to have more time
               for her career.

          During Reading:
          I’m curious to know...

            • I’m curious about why Clara applied slimy leeches on her brother David who fell off
               the barn.
            • I wonder what Clara thought she could accomplish by moving to Washington, D.C.
How is this like something I already know?

            • I know that in the past leeches were used on sick people.
            • I know that the Red Cross was started in the 1800s.

          After Reading:
What was the author trying to teach me?

            • I think the author was teaching me that you might start off in one career but that you can
always change to a new, more satisfying career.
            • The author made Clara more real for me by talking about how she had a boy help her
break the switches that were used on the children who misbehaved.
How did the photographs and captions help me understand more?
            • I learned that in the 1800s children worked in factories, sometimes working 12 hours a day.
            • I learned that Clara was very smart and thoughtful of civil war soldiers by bringing the
medicine to the wounded on the battlefield instead of waiting for the soldiers to be
               moved to a hospital.
