Lab Chimps
Because chimps are so
like us, scientists often
kept them in laboratories
to experiment on.
But because they are
such social creatures,
chimpanzees suffer
when isolated from their
friends and families.
Fortunately, the worst of
these experiments have
been banned. But some
chimps are still subjected
to experiments.
Now, Look Here!
Chimpanzees can tell each other things by the way they move their hands and feet.
We don’t know what all these gestures mean. But recently, researchers at St. Andrews
University in the United Kingdom worked out thirty-six of them. The researchers
found the gestures for saying things like Stop that!, Hug me, and Move away.
“Climb on
my back”
(showing
foot)
“Groom me here,
please!” (touching body)
“Let’s
groom” (long
scratching on
body)
“Flirt with me”
(stripping leaves) “Move over”
(little backhand
nudge) 11
