Hurricane Katrina and America's Response - page 8

“You bet!” I said, nodding my head. “One of those helicopters we
keep hearing will come to our house any minute.”
Even though I didn’t believe what I had just said, I wanted to.
I was tired, hungry, and very scared. When the storm had hit, I
couldn’t believe how fast our house filled up with water. Someone
outside shouted that one of the
levees
by Lake Pontchartrain had
failed. The levees had not been built to withstand the power of a
hurricane as strong as Katrina. Many of them had cracked and
broken, letting water crash through into the city. Everything was
underwater.
Within minutes, the water in our house was up to our waists.
Mom grabbed our dog, Charlie, and Lisa picked up Sugar, our cat.
