Brookings. He was the only Japanese pilot to do this. He left
from a Japanese submarine hidden in the Pacific Ocean off the
coast of Oregon and dropped multiple bombs. The goal was to
start a massive forest fire. Neither bombing mission caused much
damage, and no one died, but Fujita was later full of regret for
what he had done.
In 1962, Fujita presented the town with his family’s 400-year-old
samurai
sword. It had been passed down through the generations,
and he had carried it with him throughout the war. He was
surprised that the town easily forgave him.
