The mayor once said of Fujita, “He was always very humble and
always promoting the idea of peace between the United States
and Japan.’’ The community readily accepted him, and he became
an honorary citizen of the town.
Fujita’s family didn’t even know about his actions during the
war until he announced his plans to travel to Brookings. Local
churches and organizations in Brookings funded that first trip
to Oregon, in 1962. Later, Fujita repaid the favor by funding
a trip to Japan for three Brookings-Harbor High School students.
