A Honey Bee’s Body—Some Basics!
Honey bees have three main body parts: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen.
On the head there are two sensitive antennae, five eyes (two compound eyes and three
smaller ocelli in the middle of the head), a proboscis (tongue) used for grooming and
gathering nectar and water, and very strong mandibles (jaws).
The thorax has three pairs of legs and two pairs of wings.
The abdomen contains the reproductive organs, the wax glands, and a stinger. The body is
covered with bristly hairs. Pollen sticks to these hairs as the bee flies from flower to flower.
