Benson could hear the lava moving and popping.
He said, “At night, it was like a light show. The lava
sounded like surf pounding against the shore.”
Benson and Duddy survived the first night. Duddy
said, “There were several times when I just gave in to
the fact that I was going to die.” But he didn’t quit.
He started climbing. He got to the top. He was safe.
But Benson was still stuck. He heard something fall.
He thought Duddy had fallen and died.
There was a lake of lava below Benson.
