The Third Ward:
A Historic Hub of African
American Life in Houston
After the Civil War, Houston’s Third Ward grew into a vibrant
center of African American culture, business, and social life. Drawn
by the promise of urban opportunity, formerly enslaved people
from the counties surrounding Houston moved into the city.
This continued well into the 20th century. Between 1910 and 1930,
the neighborhood’s African American population swelled from
22,929 to 66,357.
