CHAPTER 1

                      The Third Ward:

         A Historic Hub of African

         American Life in Houston

After the Civil War, Houston’s Third Ward grew into a vibrant
center of African American culture, business, and social life. Drawn

by the promise of urban opportunity, formerly enslaved people

from the counties surrounding Houston moved into the city.
This continued well into the 20th century. Between 1910 and 1930,

the neighborhood’s African American population swelled from
              22,929 to 66,357.
