The current “Vehicle City” arch is a replica of one that existed
in Flint during the early 1900s.
Flint was settled by fur traders in the 19th century. Its location
along the Flint River, its position between Detroit and Saginaw,
and its abundant natural resources made it an ideal spot for
a trading post. Soon, lumber milled from the surrounding forests
became the town’s main industry. Out of that grew a thriving
carriage-making industry. This evolved into auto manufacturing
in the early 20th century. Soon, Flint was proudly known by its
nickname “Vehicle City.”
