“You think Coach Yuro will post the teams
tonight?” Malcolm asks as Iggy squeezes his
left foot into his shoe.
“It would be torture to make us wait. I
probably won’t be able to sleep if he doesn’t.”
They know they’d be two of the best
players on the junior varsity team, but a few
spots are open on varsity. The Edison High
School soccer team struggled last year, and
Coach Yuro is looking for new blood. Iggy
thinks Malcolm probably has a better chance
since last year’s goalie struggled. The senior
goalie’s name is Joe Smalley. That’s kind of
funny because the guy is huge. He’s well over
six feet tall, and he grew a thick beard over
the summer.
Malcolm pulls his foot onto the bench
and ties his mud-covered shoe. His cleats
used to be bright red, but during the first
day of tryouts, the older guys kept calling
him Dorothy and asking him to click his
heels. After that, Malcolm did his best to take
the shine off and turn them from red to a
dirty brown.
