We dedicate this book to patients with inherited disorders whose
diagnostic odyssey is years long and often ends in unsatisfactory
treatments. We also hope our book will inspire young readers to train
in the field of genetic science and medicine where they can dedicate
their life to unraveling the mysteries of the genome.

Acknowledgments: The authors would like to thank William Gahl, clinical director of the
National Human Genome Research Institute and director of the Undiagnosed Diseases
Program, for his time and expertise. We also thank Anne Sophia Everett for reading an
early draft and offering feedback. We are grateful to the patients and their family members
who generously took time to answer our questions. We have changed their names to
             protect privacy.
