walking somewhere—usually
to a place further away than
you would normally walk.
all you need
• Comfortable shoes
• Backpack
• Drink and food
Route notes
Tell an adult your route and
when you will be back. Then
they will know if you’re late
and where to look for you.
1
Pick a route.
Decide
where to go. Short hikes,
about 2–3 miles long, are
good for beginners.
2
Work out your timing.
Most people can walk at
about 3 mph, so a 6 mile
hike will take 2–3 hours,
including stops.
Take water to drink, and
on hikes of more than 2
hours take food too.
3
Gather your gear.
Check
the weather forecast and
decide whether to put
rain gear, warm clothes,
sunscreen, etc. in your
backpack.
4
Go hiking.
Stick to your
route, stop when you are
tired or see something
interesting, and enjoy
being outside!
