THE GREEN BELT MOVEMENT
Maathai began a massive
reforestation
program called the
Green Belt Movement in 1977. She involved women living in
rural villages. She taught them how to plant trees with the goal
of reforesting Kenya. They started small, growing
seedlings
in
a nursery. As the trees grew, they were replanted throughout
the country.
The Green Belt
Movement got
its name from the
long lines, or belts, of
trees that the group
planted.
