Maathai got help from women all around Kenya. The Green
Belt Movement paid them for every tree they planted. Not
only did the program help plant millions of trees, but it also
brought money to the villages. The people had fresh water and
firewood again, and the money helped families grow and thrive.
Maathai didn’t just
talk about planting
trees. She often
helped plant trees
herself.
