Many streets had fountains and water troughs,
which were filled by underground pipes. People
fetched water for use at home.

BUILDING THE BRIDGE
During the reign of Emperor Claudius
(27 BC–AD 14) the Pont du Gard was
built to carry the aqueduct across a river.
Roman engineers had a variety of tools
and machines to help them, including a
crane. People powered the crane by
walking inside the wheel. It lifted heavy
blocks of stone, cut to the right size
by skilled workers.
