was dirty and tattered. The man turned to her and chuckled. And
then, she says,
He slowly turned around, and started to walk. Well, as I re-
member, it was not so much a walk, but more like a coast.
It was just like, and I hate to say this because it sounds so
silly, but it was just like you’d imagine some ghost movie. He
moved without moving his legs, if you can picture that. The
figure just glided, up and over the hill, and disappeared. It
was really strange.

Donna approached the crest where the apparition had been
standing. She describes what happened next:
There, halfway between me and the water, was the man,
well, the ghost. It was coasting or gliding smoothly over
the sand toward the water. And, in the distance, I could
hear that whispering or giggling sound. . . . I followed that
figure as it slowly went toward the water, and I wondered
what would happen next. Well, it didn’t take long. The fig-
ure went up, closer and closer to the water, and eventually
just went right in the water. It just kept on gliding until it was
knee-deep, then shoulder-deep, and then all the way in the
water. That was the last I saw of it.

Ghostly Images
Apparitions can be found in a number of varieties. The atmo-
spheric apparition is typically seen in one place only, repeating
the same task over and over again—usually an act connected to
a traumatic event. The ghost of someone who died in an airplane
crash, for instance, may be seen repeatedly sitting in an airport
lounge, waiting for the doomed flight to be called. Another version
of the apparition is the deathbed ghost. As the name suggests, a
deathbed ghost appears at the moment of death, rising from the
physical body of the deceased person.
