LINDSAY S. ZRULL
No sound.
The bedroom door creaked when I pushed it open. The echo
reverberated in my bones.
Still nothing.
My hands instinctively covered my mouth, to muffle the sound
of my heavy breathing as I tiptoed out of the bedroom and into
the living room.
No one was there, not even my mother, who hadn’t left the
apartment in weeks. I checked every room. I was alone.
My mother never returned.
