CHAPTER 1
Who Is Dolores Huerta?
Workdays began at sunrise. People gathered in a
fi eld. They started picking tomatoes. Soon the hot
sun was beating down on them. In the fi eld, there
was no water to drink. There were no bathrooms
either. But they kept working until sunset. Their
boss, the grower, demanded it. Ripe fruit had to
be picked.
Life for these farm workers was hard. They were
paid little. Many people found it unfair. Some
tried to help them. Dolores Huerta was one of
those people.
