Am I Ready To Get A Dog?

            True or False?

1 I am okay with getting play bites, jumped on, and knocked down.

2 I will take the dog on walks even if it is too hot, raining, or I am tired.

3 My toys and clothes will always be put away, so they aren’t chewed on.

4 I will provide exercise and attention for at least 30 minutes every day.

5 I am okay to scoop up poop.

6 I will give safe food and water every day.

7 I will work on training every day.

8 I will be responsible by always shutting gates and doors.

9 It doesn’t bother me that the dog will take up the adults’ attention.

10 My family and I have time and money to be responsible dog owners.

Score 1 point for each true answer. Add up the true answers.

0 to 5: No way! You are not ready to get a dog.

6 to 8: Almost ready, but maybe next year.

9 to 10: You are ready to talk to the adults in your family about getting
                        a puppy or dog.

Before deciding if you are ready, watch a family member’s or friend’s dog for a
few days. You can also check out rescues that offer “foster weekends.” Getting

a dog is a full-time family commitment for many years. Make sure you have
enough time, space, and money to add a new member to your family.
