to bother most experiencers, as many people who believe in NDEs are indif-
ferent to science. So NDEs continue to be widely regarded as expressions of
religious or spiritual beliefs.
Some put NDEs on a middle ground. Mayo Clinic College of Medi-
cine, for example, offers a class on NDEs to first-year students. In the orga-
nization’s own words, the course covers the point “where science and spir-
ituality meet.” It focuses on how doctors—both those who accept NDEs as
a valid experience and those who don’t—might deal with reports of NDEs
