XCEPTIONAL
MARINE MAMMALS
Elephant seals are huge.
Their hind limbs are
joined in a tail-like
SEALS flipper. They dive to
great depths to find
SEA LIONS food. They are loud,

Elephant Seal Basics
Elephant seals are pinnipeds. This is a group of
marine mammals. Pinnipeds have flippers and long
bodies. They eat meat. Male pinnipeds are called
bulls. Females are called cows. Seals, sea lions,
and walruses are pinnipeds.
There are two kinds of elephant seals.
Northern elephant seals live off the western coast
of North America. Their range stretches from
Alaska’s Aleutian Islands to Baja California.
Southern elephant seals live in the waters around
Antarctica. They are the largest of all seals.
