The ice is light and tiny.
It bounces when it hits the
ground. Sleet often falls in
a mix of freezing rain, snow,
and ice pellets. A weather
app or weather channel on
television might call this
“wintry mix.” Triple burr.
To remember the difference
between sleet and hail,
think of this: Sleet forms
as it falls from the sky. Hail
forms in a cloud. That’s all
THINK ABOUT IT there is to it.
Sleet storms are harder
to forecast than rain or
snowstorms. Why do you 6
think that is?
Amount of sleet in inches
(15 cm) received during
one winter storm in
Kentucky and Indiana
in December 2004
• The storm included
thundersleet.
• During thundersleet, there is
thunder and lightning. Sleet
falls instead of rain.
• Sleet storms are
dangerous. They make
roads icy.
