Rising Up and Pushing Back
The desire to nurture and maintain a rich cultural and spiritual heri-
tage is something that unites many Native Americans, wherever
they live. But the struggle has been long and diffi cult. Old World
diseases like smallpox, measles, and scarlet fever devastated in-
digenous societies beginning in the seventeenth century. Those
