CHAPTER 4

          POWER HACKS

People use airports every day. They work in public buildings

too. Water and electricity are needed in homes. These public
services are at risk. Computers are not always up to date.

This makes it easy for hackers to access them. A hack could
          affect millions.

It was 2015. Ukraine’s power grid was attacked. Hackers
used a program called BlackEnergy. They sent emails to

three power companies. Some employees opened them.
A few clicked on a file. The file infected their computers.

Then black hats got into the systems. Over 230,000 people

          lost electricity.

Airport systems can be hacked too. In 2018, a discovery

was made. Black hat hackers had stolen airport employees’
logins. They sold them for ten dollars each. A special hack

was likely used. It is called a brute-force attack. This is

when a program tries different logins. Many are tested.
          Eventually, one works.
