black-footed ferret, and American alligator, among others. Be-
tween 1973 and 2013 the ESA prevented the extinction of 99
percent of the species that were under its protection. Equally
important, says the Endangered Species Coalition, “millions of
acres of forests, beaches, and wetlands—those species’ essen-
tial habitats—have been protected from degradation.”
