erberg states, “has repeatedly acted to deceive people and ma-
nipulate people around the world, and we don’t want them on
Facebook anywhere.” 56
Facebook has also changed its review process for paid politi-
cal advertising. The goal is to prevent foreign operatives from pur-
chasing ads aimed at interfering in the American political process.
Commenting on efforts being made by Facebook to prevent in-
terference in the 2018 midterm elections, product management
director Rob Leathern noted that “in the run up to the US midterm
elections, advertisers will have to verify and confi rm who they are

and where they are located in the US.” Advertisers were being
asked to submit government-issued identifi cation and provide a
physical mailing address. They were also required to respond to a
mailed verifi cation letter and to disclose the political party, candi-
date, organization, or business they represented.
