Fifteen-year-old Verdad has been keeping the world at
a distance since the death of her best friend, Blanca.
Between the high expectations of her hardworking mother
and the absence of her remarried father, she has enough on
her plate without letting other people get close. But when
she meets Danny, a new guy at school—who happens to be
trans—all bets are off.
Verdad’s feelings for Danny are anything but simple. For
starters, she’s never met a trans person before. After a lifetime
as an overachiever, she now finds that she’s saying the wrong
things, making inaccurate assumptions, messing up.
Plus she’s starting to suspect that her attraction to Danny
only scratches the surface of who she might like, what she
might want, who she might be.
While wrestling with her own prejudices, Verdad also has
to confront her mother’s disapproval of her relationship with
Danny. And Danny himself is a puzzle: comfortable in his skin
but keeping plenty of other secrets.
As Blanca would have said: Life is not a multiple-choice
test. And how can Verdad find the answers when she isn’t
even sure she’s asking the right questions?
