Many settlers in North America lived on farms.

arly settlers had to hunt, fish, gather, and grow all their
own foods. Indigenous Peoples, like the Mi’kmaq in
Nova Scotia, taught early settlers how to live off the land.
They showed settlers how to fish and gather berries. They
explained that beans, corn, and squash thrived when
planted together. Then they taught the settlers how to
rotate their crops to keep the soil rich. Indigenous Peoples
also showed settlers how to tap trees for maple syrup and
how to preserve meats for use during the winter when it
was more difficult to hunt.
