The
Canadian
version of the
rainbow flag flies
at many Pride
festivals in
Canada.
They held marches. They fought for their
rights. The first gay rights events were held
in Vancouver and Ottawa in August 1971.
Toronto’s first Pride event took place one year
later. It was a picnic on the Toronto Islands.
Many symbols represent Pride. The
best known is the rainbow flag. It was first
used as a symbol of the LGBTQ community in
the late 1970s.
