Gender symbols were first used to
represent the gay community in the 1970s. A
circle with a cross represents females. A circle
with an arrow represents males. Two of the
same gender symbols together are a symbol
of gay women or men.

Gay-straight alliances
(GSAs) and queer-straight
alliances (QSAs) are school
clubs. They are run by students
who want to support the LGBTQ
community. They are a safe
place for kids to talk about
LGBTQ issues. Many GSAs
and QSAs take part in
Pride events.
