It is not known with any certainty
where Cartier went to school.
At the time, a school in Dieppe,
France, was the top cartography
school in Europe. Cartography is the
process of mapmaking. Cartier may
have studied at the Dieppe school,
in which case he would have learned
map reading and mapmaking, along
with
astronomy
. Another famous
explorer, the Italian Giovanni da
Verrazzano, went to the school in
Dieppe. It is believed that he may
have sailed to the New World as
early as 1508. Some historians believe that Cartier
accompanied him on a voyage in 1524.
By the time Cartier married in 1519, he had become
a master sailor. His wife was Marie-Catherine des
Granches. She was from a wealthy family. The marriage
would have helped raise Cartier’s
status
in society.
Verrazzano goes
on an expedition
to North America.
1524
Cartier marries
Marie-Catherine.
1519
In 1524, Verrazzano
explored the coast of
North America from what
is now North Carolina,
in the United States, to
Newfoundland.
