Chapter Three

                               STANDING AGAINST

                                                   RACISM

acism is the belief that some races are better than others.

When Viola was alive, many people in North America

Rbelieved that white people were better than Black people.

White people did not want to share spaces with Black people.

Some businesses, like the Roseland Theatre, would have separate
areas for Black and white people. Other businesses, like some

restaurants and hotels, would not let Black people in at all. This

was called racial segregation. Schools and even towns were
also segregated. In Nova Scotia, a law called the Education Act

allowed schools to be segregated. Black children could only go to

Black segregated schools. Black segregated schools did not have

libraries. There were no Black segregated high schools, so Black

students could not go to high school.

Halifax, Nova Scotia was almost entirely populated by Black
Nova Scotians. The community became a symbol of the Black

12 Canadian identity and the racism they faced.
