Roman Temples
T
he Romans worshipped many different gods
and goddesses, each with special powers to
guide or protect those people who prayed to
them. Each god had his or her own temple, close to
the Forum (marketplace).
Jupiter was king
of the gods. He
controlled thunder
and lightning.
At festivals animals
might be killed
as sacrifices. The
Romans believed
that animal sacrifices
pleased the gods.
These animals were
killed at altars in
front of the city’s
biggest temples.
