GONE
Dad’s been gone almost a year.
At the start of fifth grade,
we tossed a ball after supper every night.
Then one night,
extra slices of pizza and
cupcakes with my favorite fudge frosting.
I should have known something was up.
We stayed outside after dark, laughing until my
teeth hurt, until he said,
I’m being sent overseas to do my job.
Isn’t your job here with us?
When you’re a soldier, you go
where your country needs you.
It won’t be long, he said. I’ll
be home for Christmas.
That was the only time
Dad ever told me
a lie.
